MB, BAO, BCh, MICGP, DCH, DOWH, Dip Derm (Cardiff University)

I completed my medical degree at National University of Ireland, Galway, graduating in 2002. I then moved on to complete Specialist training in general practice before taking up a position as a GP in the Student Health Centre at NUI, Galway.

This was the beginning of my interest in women’s healthcare. We served a large student population and much of my practice centred on providing services to female students. Many of these students were taking steps to manage their healthcare for the first time having moved away from home. I saw the interrelationship of each patient’s unique circumstances – from family background to economic and social factors - and how tailored, holistic care could positively impact outcomes for my patients. This belief in a patient centred approach has remained a cornerstone of my clinical practice.

In 2012, I moved to Toronto, Canada and worked as a GP in St. Michael’s Hospital Department of Family and Community Medicine which had been recently opened to meet the healthcare needs of a hugely underprivileged area of the inner city. The aim of this clinic was to create an interdisciplinary team of health professionals to meet patients’ needs in one facility including dieticians, chiropodists, physiotherapists and psychology services. The opportunity of working as part of this large multidisciplinary team has helped develop my belief in holistic medicine; looking at the whole person and the circumstances surrounding them to better understand their heathcare needs.

I returned to Ireland and joined Grange Clinic in 2017 providing GP care with a focus on women’s health. I meet many women who attend for a minor illness. Conversation during the consultation is often the first time that patients stop to reflect on their health and wellbeing and in doing so, other factors frequently emerge that are having a significant impact on their quality of life. It is with this in mind that I have developed the Complete Women’s Health service. I hope to bring a focus to women’s health, an awareness of the importance of taking time to care for yourself and to support women in managing their health and wellbeing in an informative and positive environment.
